KIRIL ARNAUDOV

Kiril Borisov Arnaudov
Born May 25, 1930 in Sofia. He graduated from Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institute - Sofia in 1953 as a mechanical engineer. He received his PhD in Engineering from Dresden University of Technology in 1968. He has a scientific background in gears and drive technology.
He began work as a technologist at the plant 16 (1953-1954), specializes then in Germany, working as a designer in Getriebewerke - Leipzig (1959) and ABUS - Dessau (1960, 1961). He was an assistant professor at Mining Geological Institute, assistant and associate professor (since 1969) at Higher Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institute - Sofia, finally an associate professor and Senior Research Associate I degree (1992) at the Institute of Mechanics and Biomechanics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, where he was head of a laboratory.
He has co-authored a textbook and a guide to Machine Elements, as well as six books on gears:

  •  „Small-modulus involute cylindrical gears“;
  • „Gears with plastic gear wheels“;
  • „Planetary gears“ (edition of BAS), translated and published in the USA (Arnaudov, K. and D. Karaivanov. Planetarygeartrains. Boca Raton: CRC Press, 2019, 358 p.);
  • „Torque method for Analysis of Compound Planetary Gear Trains“ (Lambert Academic Publishing);
  • „Involute internal gearing“;
  • A chapter in a US-published book Advances in gear design and manufacture. Edited by Stephen P. Radzevich. Boca Raton: CRC Press, 2019.

He is the author of BDS 17108-89 standard for the strength calculation of gears, as well as the other basic standards for gears. He has presented papers at scientific conferences and congresses in the following countries: Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, United Kingdom, Germany, Greece, Kazakhstan, China, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia (USSR), USA, Serbia, Ukraine, Hungary, France, Montenegro, Czech Republic, Japan. He has nearly 100 citations to his works abroad (Austria, Germany, China, Romania, Russia, USA, Ukraine, Hungary, Croatia) and two expressly translated works in the USSR, one of which is in his dissertation (Express information "Details Machine” No. 42, 1973), which is cited over 20 times, as well as one translation in India. There are also several copyright certificates in Bulgaria and one in Germany.
Initiator, founder and first president (2001 - 2003) of the Balkan Association of Power Transmissions, whose honorary president he was elected in 2012. In addition to several national meetings, he is the principal organizer of 7 scientific events - 1 national conference, 3 conferences with international participation, 2 international conferences and 1 international congress. He has been a member of multiple programs (scientific) committees of conferences abroad (Germany, the Balkans, Russia, Ukraine), including many times as Vice-Chairman of those conferences (Ukraine).
He is a representative of Bulgaria in the gears committees of the international organizations ISO and IFToMM since 1987. He has represented Bulgaria at the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance’s meetings on gears for 20 years. He was involved as a foreign expert at the German Standards Institute in the preparation of the German DIN standards. He is a member of the editorial board of the international magazine "Gearing and Transmissions" and the Bulgarian magazine "Mechanical Engineering". He has been invited to lecture in Germany, Technical University - Magdeburg (specialized course in planetary gears) and in Ukraine, OPU - Odessa. In recent years he has been sought by TU - Munich to solve specific scientific problems, incl. for the preparation of patent litigation expertise and as a dissertation reviewer. He has also delivered lectures at Higher Technical School "Angel Kanchev" - Rousse, at the Technical University - Sofia, branches Plovdiv and Sliven, the Technical University - Gabrovo and the Higher Naval School - Varna.
He has been the chairman of National Scientific and Technical Society "Gears and Drive Technique" since its inception in 1971, initially as the "Gears" section. He is awarded the silver and gold badge of the Scientific Engineering Unions, the gold badge "Prof. Assen Zlatarov", the award "Academician Angel Balevski", he is an honorary member of the Scientific Engineering Unions. He participated in a Bulgarian industrial delegation that visited Japan, attracted as a specialist in heavy gear engineering. He has participated in the Higher Attestation Committee and in a number of scientific, technical and expert councils at the Technical University - Sofia, Ministry of Mechanical Engineering, Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria. For active cooperation with our mechanical engineering sector (participation in developments with a number of research organizations and factories) and the assistance provided, he was awarded the title of “Excellence of the Ministry of Mechanical Engineering” in 1982. Nominated as Corresponding Member of BAS (2008).
Currently he works actively with the heavy machinery plant BulMachinery - Radomir and the Podemcrane crane plant - Gabrovo (the largest hoist manufacturer in the country) and advises students from TU Sofia on the design and construction of a differential for a race car with which they participate in the international Formula Student competition.
In recent years he has also worked with foreign scientists and companies:

  • Moscow Aviation Institute (Prof. Dorofeev) - on the problems of aviation reducers;
  • Manufacturer company of Wolfrom - gears for oil pipelines from Germany;
  • Manufacturer company of windmill multipliers from Switzerland (U. Giger, with whom they have several joint publications, incl. in USA).
